Akgün Altuğ: Potential Gaps in the US Market Could Open New Export Opportunities for Turkish Manufacturers

A. Akgün Altuğ, Chairman of the Board of the Sakarya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SATSO), stated that the additional tariffs imposed by the US on China present both risks and opportunities for Türkiye in his assessment of the new customs duties announced by US President Donald Trump.

In his statement, SATSO President Altuğ said: “The new US tariff policies, which will significantly impact global trade—benefiting some countries while putting others at a disadvantage—have introduced an additional 10% customs duty, the minimum rate, on imports from our country. Furthermore, a 25% extra tax has been imposed on all imported automobiles.”

“Trade wars and the competition among nations to boost domestic production are escalating. The US, home to the world’s largest consumer economy and import market, is actively pursuing this objective.”

“The US tariffs could have mixed effects on Türkiye’s economy. While China’s potential shift of exports to alternative markets may increase competitive pressure on Turkish producers in similar sectors, the gaps left in the US market could also create fresh export opportunities for Turkish manufacturers. It is vital for Türkiye to maintain its diplomatic efforts and reevaluate its export strategies during this period,” he added.
