Türkiye Advances in Geothermal Energy
Türkiye continues to strengthen its energy security through the use of renewable resources. In addition to solar and wind, the country is making significant progress in other renewable sectors, notably by harnessing its underground geothermal fluids. This strategy has led to a remarkable increase in geothermal energy investments and capacity.
Current Geothermal Capacity and Main Uses
Installed Capacity and Power Generation
Türkiye’s total installed geothermal capacity has reached 19,836 megawatts thermal (MWt). Geothermal energy is used in a variety of areas, but its primary application remains electricity generation, which accounts for 65.5% of its total use. According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, there are 68 Geothermal Power Plants (JES) in operation in Türkiye, with a combined installed capacity of 1,786 megawatts. These facilities produced a total of 11.66 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2025, representing 3.2% of Türkiye’s annual electricity production.
Thermal Water and Heating Applications
Besides electricity, 12.3% of the utilized geothermal capacity is dedicated to heating thermal spas, hotels, facilities, baths, and hospitals. This highlights the sector’s contribution to both health and tourism.
Residential and Agricultural Benefits
Geothermal energy also plays a vital role in residential heating. Currently, 9.68% of the total geothermal energy, equivalent to meeting the needs of 170,000 homes, is used in central heating systems. In the agricultural sector, 9.6% of Türkiye’s geothermal capacity is allocated to greenhouse heating, supporting approximately 7,000 decares of greenhouse area.
