Filyos Maintenance Center Enhances Black Sea Energy Fleet with Advanced Engineering and International Standards

Strategic Infrastructure for Turkey’s Black Sea Energy Operations

The Filyos Maintenance Center, located at Zonguldak Filyos Port, has emerged as a vital hub for the Turkish energy fleet. According to Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, the center now serves as the “home” of the energy fleet, managing maintenance, repair, and testing for critical assets such as the Osman Gazi Floating Production Unit (FPU), drilling and seismic vessels, and subsea systems using domestic engineering capabilities.

Preparing New Vessels for Black Sea Missions

Currently, intense activities are underway at the center. The team is preparing the newly added vessel Yıldırım for its first deployment in the Black Sea after its tower was dismantled to pass through the straits. Simultaneously, Turkey’s first floating production platform, Osman Gazi, is being readied for operations at the Sakarya Gas Field. Yıldırım is expected to begin its mission in April, while Osman Gazi is scheduled to start in the third quarter of the year.

Comprehensive and Multi-Purpose Facilities

The Filyos Maintenance Center spans a total area of 60,000 square meters and provides maintenance, testing, and overhaul for fleet vessels, subsea systems, and various equipment. The center is equipped with machining, welding, sandblasting-paint, and surface coating workshops. Hydraulic, electrical, and non-destructive testing units, as well as dedicated maintenance for drilling equipment and ship propellers, are also part of the facility’s capabilities.

Specialized Testing and International Compliance

The center features specialized test pools for underwater robots and wellhead control equipment, ensuring thorough pre-operation testing. All activities at the center are conducted in accordance with international quality and technical standards recognized in the oil and gas industry, including API Q1 and API Spec 7-2. These standards ensure safety, quality, and operational continuity throughout all maintenance and testing processes.

Reducing Dependence and Increasing Efficiency

The Filyos Maintenance Center keeps the Turkish energy fleet—especially deep-sea drilling and seismic research vessels—in a constant state of readiness. The center shortens maintenance times, boosts operational efficiency, reduces foreign dependency, and minimizes costs. Minister Bayraktar emphasized that by leveraging national engineering capabilities, the center strengthens operational continuity and contributes high value-added technical services within Turkey, supporting the nation’s goal of full energy independence.
